Vintage fashion dominated the current fashion trends this year, garnering 31.7 million Pinterest pins and 5.9 million mentions on Instagram, according to a recent study by Public Desire. Meanwhile, niche styles like Acubi and Quiet Luxury are becoming more popular due to their increasing social media presence.
Public Desire, a website that analyzed online engagement with fashion trends during Fashion Week 2024 to reveal the top fashion movements of 2024, used data from platforms such as Google, Pinterest, Instagram, and TikTok. The study measured search volumes, social media engagement (pins, hashtags, mentions), and public interest. The trends were ranked according to their composite scores.
Vintage ranks first in overall popularity among the fashion movements in 2024, with the highest Pinterest pins (31.7 million) and Instagram mentions (5.9 million), resulting in an overall score of 75.86.
Grunge takes second place with the highest Google search volume (91,400) and a strong presence on Pinterest (28.6 million pins). Its overall score of 37.87 highlights its appeal to younger generations seeking to express individuality through an edgier, more alternative style.
With its rugged and traditional appeal, the Cowgirl trend took third place, having the most Google searches (816,400). It also attracted 1.4 million pins on Pinterest and 1.2 million mentions on both Instagram and TikTok, showcasing its appeal. The overall score of 36.18 highlights the growing interest in blending traditional Western elements with modern fashion.
In fourth place, the Coquette trend stands out with the highest amount of Pinterest pins (2.8 million) and Instagram mentions (2.2 million). Its overall score of 34.25 reflects its strong appeal among those who enjoy romantic and feminine fashion.
The Y2K fashion movement ranks fifth, driven by nostalgia for the early 2000s, gathering 90,300 Google searches and 8 million Pinterest pins, which is the second-highest Pinterest presence. It also achieved 2.6 million mentions on Instagram, contributing to an overall score of 30.93.
In sixth place is Cottagecore. It gathered 93,100 Google searches, 5.8 million Pinterest pins, 1.8 million Instagram mentions, and 48,900 TikTok mentions. Its overall score of 22.48 demonstrates public interest in simplicity and nature-inspired looks.
Dark Academia ranked eighth, with 35,900 Google searches and 2.6 million Pinterest pins. It also gained 516,400 Instagram mentions and 5,900,000 TikTok mentions. Dark Academia continues to resonate with people who prefer a scholarly aesthetic, with an overall score of 7.30.
Quiet Luxury, or Old Money, known for its minimalist elegance, ranked ninth with 120,800 Google searches, 228,000 Pinterest pins, and 40,200 Instagram mentions. Its overall score of 4.00 highlights the appeal of understated luxury to the public.
Light Academia rounds out the chart with 55,200 Google searches, 842,000 Pinterest pins, and 79,300 Instagram mentions. Its overall score of 2.79 shows that it appeals to fans of soft, scholarly-inspired fashion.
