You may remember the 2000 movie Bring It On, which follows the Toro cheerleading squad from the Rancho Carne High School as they prepare for the national cheerleading championship.
It’s kind of a big deal. It spawned five sequels and a Broadway musical with music by Lin-Manuel Miranda (of Hamilton fame). Bring It On is now considered a cult classic, and made it to Entertainment Weekly‘s 50 Best High School Movies list at #30. Legendary film critic Roger Ebert even called it the Citizen Kane of cheerleader movies. If you’re not familiar, Citizen Kane from 1941 is widely regarded as the greatest film ever made. Side story: just last month, Paddington 2 replaced Citizen Kane as the top-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes.
Anyway, one of the best parts of Bring It On is Whitney, the catty cheerleader who wasn’t ready to welcome Missy Pantone (Eliza Dushku) to the squad. But as Torrance Shipman (Kirsten Dunst) famously said, it’s “not a democracy, it’s a cheer-ocracy.”
The movie came out in 2000 so imagine my shock and delight when I discovered that the actress who played Whitney, Nicole Bilderback, is also on Brooklyn Nine-Nine!
Forgive me, I am late to the B99 party so this is news to me.
She played Captain Julie Kim in season seven, the 99th precinct’s temporary captain. She was only in one episode (S07E02: Captain Kim) but she had a good and substantial role. If you’re a fan of Bring It On and Whitney is your favorite character, you would definitely recognize her.
She’s definitely been busy since her W-W-W-Whitney days from Bring It On. She’s starred in the movies Bad Girls from Valley High, Cruel World, and Mercenaries. She’s more active on TV and has appeared in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, 7th Heaven, ER, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dawson’s Creek, House, Heroes, The Mentalist, Bones, and recently, Cruel Summer. Bilderback is set to appear as a character named Pocahontas in the upcoming TV film Snow.
That’s all! Have a great day!
