Elections have always been important in the lives of Filipinos. They’re an indication that we are practicing our rights and our democracy. We always hear people tell us to ‘vote wisely’ during this time, but do we actually practice this?
The Philippines doesn’t really have a clean track record when it comes to politicians. Our government has experienced pitfalls, but those are learning experiences for the people in power and the citizens.
Though there are political dynasties, the Philippines has been open to electing people from different backgrounds – whether from the upper class, lower class, IP or even from different industries – as long as they are ready to serve. Is the latter right, though? Is it enough to be willing to serve?ย
You should vote for yourself. What are your basic rights? What are the things and opportunities that you need that the government will be able to provide? Access to food, clean water, education, employment, and healthcare. Those should be accessible to all citizens, regardless of which social class you are in. It is the government’s job to bring these things closer to every individual.
You should vote for your peace of mind. This is by far, the craziest election season we’ve seen, and it is up to you to vote for someone who will give you peace of mind. Someone who will make sure that the streets are safe for you and your family. That your freedom is upheld against those who want to imprison your voice and your right to live.
You should vote for your children. You might not fully realize this, but your votes will make sure that your children have a better future ahead of them. The people you should put into power should make laws that will benefit future generations.
You should vote for the environment. While global warming is the biggest issue, you can do something with your vote. Vote for someone who will push agendas that will help preserve our environment and its wildlife. Someone who understands the world’s biodiversity and how we all benefit from it.
You should vote for someone who will do checks and balances in the government. Different opinions and values give our government the balance that it needs to have. It gives voice to different social classes and sectors.
You should vote for someone who will respect you. Someone who will value your thoughts, opinions, values, and faith. Respect is earned. However, as an individual, you should have respect from and for the government for being a part of the society that upholds its laws.
You should vote for your country. Your vote is the only thing that can push change. Your love and loyalty should always be for your country, not for individuals, parties or agendas. You should vote for the betterment of the country and its people. For the preservation of our heritage, history, and rights.
