The Robertson House offers guests a step back in time with its stunning interiors heavily inspired by Singapore in the 1800’s. It also draws inspiration from the life of Dr. J Murray Robertson (yes, he’s a real person), a prominent Municipal Councillor from Singapore’s colonial past who has a pivotal role in the Singapore River in the country’s trade history.
The unique riverside life of colonial Singapore, Dr. Robertson’s life, and Singapore’s spice trade all contribute to the hotel’s design and decor.
The Robertson House is covered in everything black and white, 19th-century-inspired furniture, wood and Solihiya accents, and many decor pieces related to the spice trade. You’ll even find captivating black-and-white murals of scenes from the spice trade and framed artwork of spices.
It was interesting to see how the hotel’s cohesive design offers guests a look back into stories of history. The Robertson House seamlessly combines the elegance of modern times with Singapore’s colonial era—from the lobby, and the beautifully design elevators, to the stunning rooms.
The Rooms at The Robertson House
The Robertson House offers five room types, all featuring lush shower amenities, cozy beds, a distinct black-and-white design, a filtered water dispenser, a coffee machine, and complimentary in-room amenities specially created for The Robertson House.
We got to stay in their Club Room which offers a breathtaking view of the Singapore River thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows. The room also includes complimentary minibar goodies with Singaporean snacks and curated drinks.
I loved how luxurious and sophisticated the room design was. It made us feel like crazy rich Asians from old-money families!
The Club Room also offers guests access to the exclusive club lounge called the 1823 Reading Room.
Activities and Amenities at The Robertson House
The 1823 Reading Room was designed to be like the home library of Dr. Robertson. The exquisite 19th-century design of this exclusive lounge made us feel like stepping back in time, giving a peek at what it might feel like to visit the home of a famous person in Singapore back in the 1800s.
The 1823 Reading Room is named after the year the National Library of Singapore opened its doors to the public. Following the library’s footsteps, this club lounge offers guests a variety of books to read and even take home.
The lounge serves refreshments and pastries all day, but at 6-8 PM, guests can enjoy canapes and curated drinks while enjoying the river view.
If you want to beat Singapore’s humidity, you can go for a swim in The Robertson House’s beautiful outdoor 25-meter pool. You can also get a drink or two from the pool bar.
For those who want to stay active during their stay, there’s an indoor and outdoor gymnasium that’s open 24 hours so you can complete your workout anytime you want.

The Robertson House is also home to Entrêpot, an all-day dining Anglo-Asian restaurant that serves Asian-European fusion dishes with a unique flair.
Some of their signature dishes include the Signature Chinese Terracotta Tea, a starter featuring plump dumplings served with a ceremonial pouring of savory Chinese dried mushroom tea from a traditional terracotta pot. It offers delicious flavors as well as a thrilling table-side presentation.
The Australian Wagyu Tajima MS4 Beef Striploin, one of the must-try main dishes, features a unique plating presentation. It’s served on a tiny charcoal grill (taking “fresh off the grill” to a different level) atop a piece of houba leaf and sprinkled with dried pieces of laksa leaves which add a whole other dimension of flavor to the steak.
Entrêpot is also where guests can enjoy a sumptuous buffet breakfast with a delectable selection of dishes.
Beyond the doors of The Robertson House—only a few steps within the property—is a hidden speakeasy bar named Chandu. It takes inspiration from opium dens and clan associations, offering visitors a peek into a different side of Singapore’s 19th-century era. This intimate bar only has a few tables and less than a dozen seats, giving you a chance to truly immerse yourself in the unique experience that Chandu has to offer.
Historical characters and famous stories inspire their signature cocktails, so be prepared to hear interesting stories from Chandu’s bartender as you enjoy your drink.
