Tanghalang Pilipino’s “Sandosenang Sapatos” is returning to the stage!

The musical, last staged from November 15 to December 8, 2024, will return for a limited weekend run from April 11 to 13, 2025, with shows at 2 PM and 7 PM.

The rerun will be staged at Arete at the Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City instead of at the Tanghalang Ignacio Jimenez at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex in Pasay City, where it was previously held.

Tanghalang Pilipino is also extending Kisapmata for a limited double feature run. Kisapmata is the stage adaptation of Mike de Leon’s film of the same name, which in turn is adapted from the short story “The House on Zapote Street.” The short story is part of Reportage on Crime, an anthology of true crime stories written by National Artist Nick Joaquin, writing under the pen name Quijano de Manila.

Kisapmata‘s new show dates will be April 4 to 13, 2025, with shows at 2 PM and 7 PM on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, also at the Arete.

Sandosenang Sapatos is a musical adapted from the short story by Dr. Luis Gatmaitan and follows the journey of Susie, a young girl who wishes to fulfill her shoemaker father’s dream of having a ballerina for a daughter. Susie, however, was born without feet.

Each year, on her birthday, Susie enters the world of enchanting shoes, where the Shoe Fairy gives her a pair of feet, allowing her to dance to her heart’s desire. However, she loses her feet whenever she leaves the enchanting world and faces her father’s disappointment. It takes a tragedy for her to understand the depths of her father’s love.

Why should you watch it?

Sandosenang Sapatos is touching, and while some plot choices felt odd for this writer (that are spoilers), it’s the kind of story that Filipino families would surely love.

Powerful performances from the entire cast back the musical’s touching story. Wincess Jem Yana was spectacular as Susie. Her vocals hit every note effortlessly, whether in the high-energy number “Sa Panaginip Lang Ako Minamahal” or the more emotional “Anong Silbi ng Pagsulat.”

Yana’s stamina is also incredible, as she is onstage for most of the one-act play, which had no intermission. Her only break seems to be in the “waking world,” where she is in bed or a wheelchair.

Susie’s world of enchanting shoes is a sight to behold, and it’s no surprise that Sandosenang Sapatos won Outstanding Costume Design and Outstanding Production for Children at the 14th Gawad Buhay Awards.
