CCTV footage circulating online shows a man attempting to rob a woman at an ATM in Guangdong, China only to return her money and leave in amusement. While the video has no sound, media outlets report that it captured an attempted robbery with the thief changing his mind at the last minute.
The CCTV footage displays a man holding a knife as he advanced towards a woman at an ATM. She was withdrawing from the machine when the man surprised her. She is said to have had 2,500 yuan (around Php 19,600) on her. After she gave him all the cash he demanded more since he found the amount to be quite small.

However, after forcing her to open her account again on the ATM he saw that she had already withdrawn everything and that her balance was at zero. In what might have been a random moment of compassion the thief decided to hand back the money instead and leave with a smile on his face.

Some think the smile reflected that the thief felt good about the kindness he showed. Others say he just found it amusing that the girl only had a ‘small’ amount.
Whatever the case, the man was shortly apprehended and arrested by the police.
