Man Who Spent $6.2 Million on Viral Duct-Taped Banana Artwork Reveals His Plan for It

The viral duct-taped banana artwork made headlines once again after it was sold for $6.2 million in an auction at Sothebyโ€™s in New York.

This artwork, literally a banana taped to a white wall, is called “Comedian,” created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, who is known for his provocative and playful installations.

According to reports, the price started at $800,000 and soared to $5.2 million. The bidding exceeded the pre-sale high estimate of $1.5 million, with participants bidding in the room, on the phone, and online.

Cryptocurrency entrepreneur and founder of cryptocurrency platform TRON, Justin Sun, succeeded in taking home the iconic duct-taped banana artwork.

His million-dollar purchase includes a roll of duct tape, instructions on how to install the banana, and a certificate of authenticity guaranteeing it is an original work by Cattelan. The banana itself is not included, as it would rot quickly.

Sun said in a statement on X that “Comedian” is more than just an artwork, expressing his honor at being its owner.

โ€œIt represents a cultural phenomenon that bridges the worlds of art, memes, and the cryptocurrency community. I believe this piece will inspire more thought and discussion in the future and will become a part of history,” he noted. “I am honored to be the proud owner of this iconic work and look forward to it sparking further inspiration and impact for art enthusiasts around the world.”

Guess what his plan for it is? Sun revealed that he plans to eat the multimillion-dollar banana.

Additionally, in the coming days, I will personally eat the banana as part of this unique artistic experience, honoring its place in both art history and popular culture,” he reiterated.

Unveiled in 2019 at Art Basel Miami Beach, the duct-taped banana artwork garnered so much attention that it had to be taken down. Since then, it has become a viral sensation, sparking global discussions. “Comedian” was sold in three editions, each ranging from $120,000 to $150,000.
