Great news for anime enthusiasts! Makoto Shinkai’s new film will be announced this year.

The renowned Japanese director celebrated the new year with a surprise and a heartwarming message for his fans.
“Happy New Year! 2024 was a year I spent working on a new movie. It’s a great joy to build a new world that no one has seen before from scratch with my colleagues,” Shinkai wrote in Japanese with an English translation by X (formerly Twitter).
He added: “I’ll do my best to announce it in some way this year. I hope 2025 will be a peaceful year for everyone.”
The Japanese director is the visionary genius behind the hit animated films Your Name (2016), Weathering With You (2019), and Suzume (2022). All three animated movies became the highest-grossing Japanese films of all time in Japan and worldwide at the time of its release.
His most recent work, Suzume, was nominated for “Best Animated Film” in several international awards shows such as the Golden Globes, Annie Awards, and Saturn Awards.
With the anticipation for his new anime film rising among viewers, fellow fans can look forward to the live film adaptation of his popular 2007 anime film 5 centimeters per second, which is set to be released this year.
Makoto Shinkai is an award-winning Japanese filmmaker and novelist. Regarded as one of Japan’s most commercially successful directors, his animated films are known for their distinctive style and recurring themes, often exploring star-crossed romance, the impacts of distance on relationships, and elements of fantasy and science fiction.
