LOOK: Lechon Kawali Flavored Cracklings Made From Green Peas Exist and Here's Where You Can Buy It

The Filipino palate has broadened because of the booming restaurant scene and the continuous import of foreign concepts (pre-pandemic, of course). But no matter how many cuisines we try, we always come home to Filipino food. There’s something comforting about a hot bowl of sinigang and tinola, a freshly-cooked plate of liempo, and a still-sizzling pan of sisig. We love Filipino food so much that we’ll eat it in whatever form it takes.

Recently, we discovered a line of cracklings that turns Pinoy flavors into chichirya. It’s called Super Crunch Chipcharon and they have three flavors: Lechon Kawali, Suka’t Sili, and Pinoy Bawang. That’s right, you can have these familiar flavors in chicharon form.

We enjoyed the Pinoy Bawang for its strong garlicky flavor that’s a mainstay in Filipino cuisine. Think sinangag na kanin, garlic longganisa, and the generous serving of garlic cloves when a recipe just calls for one or two. We like its flavor but our favorite would have to be the Lechon Kawali. It’s more subtle, with a hint of lechon kawali. When you chew it, you get the tangy taste of vinegar, the dipping sauce of this iconic dish. Both are great interpretations of classic Pinoy flavors.

But! What we love about Chipcharon is that they’re actually not chicharon. They’re not made from pork but from green peas. Eating this is guilt-free and is an excellent choice for vegetarians who want to indulge in chicharon.
