A few days ago, President Duterte’s comments regarding “separation” with US ties made headlines. At an economic forum in Beijing the Philippine President expressed his intention to form an alliance with China and Russia. A few days later, however, he clarified that he did not really mean separation from the US. He said, “When you say severance of ties, you cut the diplomatic relations. I cannot do that. Why? It’s to the best interest of my country that we maintain that relationship.”
