Live-Action “Moana” Is in the Works, Dwayne Johnson Spills the Deets

Disney’s Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger announced during The Walt Disney Company’s Meeting of Shareholders Webcast that a live-action reimagining of “Moana” is currently in the works!

Dwayne Johnson spilled the deets in a recent video released by Walt Disney Studios. “As many of you may not know, the brilliant team of Disney Animation, my partners, we found so much inspiration for Maui in the mana and the presence of my late grandfather– the legendary High Chief Peter Maivia. He walks in, lights up the room, the energy, the tattoos, the hair, the bod,” The Rock shared before he is joined by his children Jasmine and Tiana as they sang, “When you’re staring at a demigod!

“It’s still very early in the process, there’s so much work to be done,” he also explained. Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia via their Seven Bucks Productions, and Beau Flynn via Flynn Picture Co. join him as the producer of the new film. Meanwhile, his co-star who voiced Moana, Auli‘i Cravalho, is one of the executive producers along with Scott Sheldon of Flynn Picture Co.

Also said to take part in the production are “Moana” screenwriter Jared Bush and another of Samoan heritage Dana Ledoux Miller. Bush is also the director and co-writer of “Encanto” and a writer and co-director of “Zootopia” – both Oscar®-winning films by Disney.

The latest Disney live-action remake next to “The Little Mermaid” (set to premiere on May 26) will feature its original soundtrack written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa’I, and Mark Mancina, “How Far I’ll Go”. This critically acclaimed song performed by Cravalho got Miranda a Grammy® for Best Song Written for Visual Media win, as well as Oscar and Golden Globe® nominations.

We also recall that “Moana” broke a Billboard Soundtrack chart record for the amount of time spent at No. 1 (52 weeks) in 2021! Moreover, the global phenomenon was an Academy Award (Best Animated Feature Film), a BAFTA (Best Animated Feature Film), and a Golden Globe (Best Motion Picture – Animated) nominee.

Who will play Maui in the live-action “Moana”? As the voice of Maui in the 2016 hit feature film, Johnson will be reprising his role in the remake. “I’m deeply humbled and overcome with gratitude to bring the beautiful story of Moana to the live-action big screen,” Johnson told Disney. “This story is my culture, and this story is emblematic of our people’s grace and warrior strength. I wear this culture proudly on my skin and in my soul, and this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reunite with Maui — is one that runs very deep for me.”

“I want to thank my partners at Disney for their strong commitment to this special endeavor because there is no better world for us to honor the story of our people, our passion, and our purpose than through the realm of music and dance, which is at the core of who we are as Polynesian people,” he stated.
