Following the massive success of Hello, Love, Again, which became the first-ever Filipino film to gross over P1 billion in less than two weeks since its theatrical release, netizens have been labeling Joross Gamboa as the “Box Office Lucky Charm.”
Joross, an actor and comedian who first gained recognition as the 2nd runner-up in the first season of Star Circle Quest, has starred in numerous films as a supporting character.
No matter how small or big his role is, the 39-year-old actor has consistently showcased his impressive acting skills, resonating deeply with audiences. What some social media users view as “luck” is underscored by his appearance in several box-office hits, such as Cathy Garcia-Molina’s My Ex and Whys and Olivia Lamasan’s Starting Over Again, which earned over P400 million and P579 million at the box office, respectively.
He also played a supporting role in the 2018 romance-drama film The Hows of Us, starring alongside former love team and ex-couple Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla. This marked the first of three films shared by Kathryn and the 39-year-old comedian.
Now, Joross is part of the top three highest-grossing Filipino films of all time: Hello, Love, Goodbye (P880 million), Rewind (P924 million), and Hello, Love, Again (P1+ billion).
Film producer and talent manager Noel Ferrer congratulated Joross, along with Star Cinema and GMA Pictures, for the success of Hello, Love, Again on Threads.
“THANK YOU to the whole @starcinema team – and @gmapictures who have been sooooo good to JOROSS too… BUT REALLY, WE ARE SOOOO PROUD OF YOU @joross_gamboa — living up to our standard really,” Noel wrote.
He added: “Kahusayan at kabutihan… at dinagdagan mo pa nga — kasayahan!! TULOY LANG (Excellence and kindness… and you’ve even added more — happiness!! KEEP GOING).”
Back in January, Joross expressed that he felt blessed to be appreciated by fans and moviegoers for his acting work when he starred in Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera’s Rewind, which surpassed Hello, Love, Goodbye in total box office gross.
“Sa totoo lang kasi, hindi ako naniniwala sa luck. Mas naniniwala ako sa ‘blessed’ (To be honest, I don’t believe in luck. I believe more in being blessed).” He said in an online interview with TV Patrol.
“Actually, it’s the other way around. Hindi ako swerte sa mga pelikula, hindi ganon yung nakikita ko, mas nakikita ko na blessed ako dahil napasama ako sa magagandang pelikula na tinatangkilik ng mga tao (I don’t consider myself lucky with films—that’s not how I see it. What I see is that I’m blessed because I’ve been part of great films that people love),” he continued.
Named the “box office lucky charm” by social media users, Joross’s supporting roles highlight that the success of a film also relies on the dedication and hard work of supporting and minor actors, crew, and everyone working behind the scenes, ensuring that they would produce a film that audiences will enjoy and love.
