The HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S might just be the tablet that could potentially convince iPad users to make the switch.
Hear me out: I have been a longtime iPad user both for working on the go and pursuing my creative hobbies. But while it provided apps and features that made working on it such a breeze, there were still plenty of inconveniences that I couldn’t ignore. (I will be discussing each of them throughout this article.)
Enter the HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S: the newest HUAWEI tablet with PC-level capabilities, creativity tools, and a gorgeous Fully Upgraded PaperMatte Display. In all honesty, I was blown away by how every feature I enjoyed on my 2018 iPad Pro could be found in this tablet—only that it does it far better, and offers so much more.
Here are four reasons why I think the HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S is objectively the better choice:
1. PaperMatte Display: No glare, no reflection – just a natural reading and writing experience
The first thing I noticed and immediately loved about the HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S is its upgraded PaperMatte Display technology. This stand-out feature of the HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S achieves a paper-like feel with its anti-glare and anti-reflective properties, which means I won’t struggle with not being able to see my screen under harsh sunlight and with getting eye strain when using the tablet in a dark room. Plus, it’s certified by SGS for eye protection which is already a huge deal for me considering that I get frequent migraines when my eyes are particularly dry and tired from extended screen usage.
The PaperMatte Display also feels so smooth to the touch and doesn’t capture fingerprints and annoying scratches like my 2018 iPad Pro’s glass screen would. I also find it much more comfortable to write and draw with this than a glass screen. In fact, I had to purchase a paper-like screen protector for my 2018 iPad Pro just so I could have a more pleasant and realistic writing and drawing experience. With the HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S, it gets rid of this unnecessary step.
The HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S PaperMatte technology also delivers stunning visuals with true-to-life colors. Just check out how close the colors displayed on the HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S are to this magazine cover compared to the 2018 iPad Pro.
2. Seamless workflow with the M-Pencil and Smart Magnetic Keyboard
While the iPad relies on Bluetooth connectivity for its Apple Pencil and keyboard, the HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S utilizes Nearlink technology which is comparatively much better. Both the 3rd gen M-Pencil and the Smart Magnetic Keyboard are powered by this Nearlink tech which brings higher accuracy, near-zero latency, and impressive pressure sensitivity.
This only means that even while the Smart Magnetic Keyboard is detached and far away from the HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S, there are no lags with my typing. The same goes for the M-Pencil—even with as thick as 20 sheets of paper in between the pen and the screen, it can still write without issues.
The battery of the M-Pencil also doesn’t drain as rapidly as the Apple Pencil because of Nearlink. Continuous usage of the Apple Pencil will require me to charge it several times throughout the day which always disrupts my workflow. The M-Pencil, meanwhile, can last hours of continuous usage before it crucially needs to be charged.
And unlike the iPad, the HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S already comes bundled with the M-Pencil and the Smart Magnetic Keyboard at no additional cost. That already saves you the hassle of having to purchase them separately!
3. It’s super sleek and stylish
The HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S isn’t just functional; it could very well also be a fashion accessory! I’m the type of person who likes matching my belongings, including gadgets, with my personal style. And with this tablet, I know that I don’t have to sacrifice aesthetics for the sake of PC-level power.
I personally love the Violet color of my HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S, but it also comes in an elegant Space Gray. The white color of the Smart Magnetic Keyboard and cover, meanwhile, keeps it looking very classy and minimalist—perfect for complementing with any outfit when I’m bringing it around!
Speaking of bringing it around, the HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S is so portable and lightweight. It’s honestly a shock that a tablet this slim at 6.35mm can still deliver a powerful performance.
4. GoPaint has everything you need in a drawing app and more
Now, here’s what I believe is the star of the HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S and what successfully convinced me to make the switch. The HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S is the very first to be equipped with HUAWEI’s self-developed GoPaint app which is the creative tool that rivals Apple’s Procreate.
GoPaint comes equipped with 100+ brush presets (a lot of which I can confidently say are much better than what Procreate offers), preset color palettes (more than what Procreate has), and a lot more tools that would transform any artwork to become even better.
This app also encourages an intuitive experience for both professional and non-professional artists. Even those who don’t make art at all would find this app so user-friendly, especially with its interactive tutorial, a variety of canvas options, symmetry grids, and a reference window.
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience creating art pieces with GoPaint not only because of these built-in tools and features but also because of the PaperMatte Display and the low latency of the M-Pencil’s Nearlink tech. The PaperMatte Display mimicked the feel of drawing on paper and didn’t cause any of the usual inconveniences of drawing on an iPad—like fingerprints and scratches on the screen, or getting lightly burned on the hand because of the hot glass LCD when I’ve been drawing for hours. The M-Pencil not running out of battery charge quickly was also a huge bonus. I likewise loved how easily it was to detach the tablet itself from the Smart Magnetic Keyboard so I could draw at a better angle or surface. And most importantly: not once did GoPaint crash after drawing on so many layers in one project.
It also merits saying that GoPaint is already pre-installed in the HUAWEI MatePad 11’5”S at no additional cost, unlike Procreate which you have to purchase from the App Store.
The HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S truly is a powerful tablet that answers all your needs without it being so pricey. With its PaperMatte Display, revolutionary Nearlink technology, an incredible GoPaint app, and other productivity features like PC-level WPS and HUAWEI Notes, the HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S is the perfect work and creative tool for anyone and everyone, whatever their lifestyle is.
I will personally be reaching for the HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S more than my 2018 iPad Pro, knowing that I will have a much better experience working on the go, unleashing my creativity, and enjoying immersive audio-visual entertainment.
