Sheโs now your favorite artistโs favorite artist! Chappell Roan has finally won her well-deserved first Grammy Award.
On February 3 (Philippine Time), Chappell Roan won Best New Artist at this year’s Grammys. She bested fellow nominees Sabrina Carpenter, Doechii, Raye, Benson Boone, Khuruangbin, Shaboozey, and Teddy Swims.
In her Grammy acceptance speech, she called on record labels to give new artists a liveable wage and healthcare access.
โI told myself if I ever won a Grammy and I got to stand up here in front of the most powerful people in music, I would demand that labels and the industry profiting millions of dollars off artists would offer a liveable wage and healthcare, especially to developing artists,” she said. “Because I got signed so youngโI got signed as a minorโand when I got dropped, I had zero job experience under my belt and, like most people, I had a difficult time finding a job in a pandemic and could not afford health insurance.”
She added: “It was so devastating to feel so committed to my art and feel so betrayed by the system and so dehumanized to not have health [care]. If my label would have prioritized artistsโ health, I could have been provided care by a company I was giving everything to. So record labels need to treat their artists as valuable employees with a livable wage and health insurance and protection. Labels, we got you, but do you got us?”
She has also been nominated for Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Pop Solo Performance, among others.
Known for being an openly queer artist, Chappell Roan rose to mainstream fame for her viral tracks “Good Luck, Babe!” Casual,” “Red Wine Supernova,” and “Hot To Go!”
