Certified marites, beware! Officials of a local barangay in Manila have begun imposing fines on residents caught engaging in chismisan (gossip) with their neighbors.
According to barangay captain Juan K. Maniwala in a statement sent to When In Manila, “We are cracking down on the rampant spread of gossip that has plagued our community. It’s time to put an end to chismosas! We have already begun installing listening devices all over the streets to monitor all public areas.”
The corresponding fines are as follows:
- Chismisan outside the house:ย PHP 20 (exact change only)
- Chismisan at the sari-sari store:ย PHP 30
- Chismisan at a birthday party:ย PHP 50
- Chismisan involving alleged romantic entanglements: PHP 75
- Chismisan outside a school campus:ย PHP 50
- Chismisan at any recreational area (basketball court, clubhouse, playground): PHP 100
- Chismisan at a funeral parlor:ย PHP 2,000
Local marites caught spreading tea will immediately be fined on the spot after first sharing the gossip with the barangay official.
Chismis about the barangay official will result in a double penalty and mandatory attendance at a public apology session, which will be live-streamed on social media.
Repeat offenders will be forced to attend “maritesย rehabilitation classes.”
