Chinese National Arrested, Faces Deportation for Kicking Cat to Death

Trigger warning: This article discusses animal cruelty.

The Chinese national, identified as Jiang Shan, who made headlines for allegedly kicking a community cat to death at Ayala Triangle Gardens in Makati City, has been arrested.

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) revealed that Jiang was arrested following their report on the animal cruelty incident, which occurred on January 4.

“Immigration Intelligence Agents acted swiftly on PAWS’ report of cruelty committed against a helpless community cat in Ayala Triangle Gardens (ATG) and immediately arrested Jiang Shan on March 11, 2025,” PAWS said.

“Jiang was caught on CCTV kicking a cat to death, and he was also caught by Ayala Triangle Gardens (ATG) security guards and several witnesses.”

On March 6, CARA Welfare Philippines reported that the community cat named Ken was resting when the incident happened. The organization also released CCTV footage stills showing Jiang kicking Ken, along with a photo of his Chinese passport.

“When asked why he committed the crime, Jiang claimed that he was ‘having a bad day,'” PAWS added.

“Witnesses and barangay officials erroneously believed that there must be a complainant from the Ayala Triangle Gardens management before a case could be filed. This resulted in Jiang being released but he was later on caught by immigration officials.”

In addition to violating Republic Act (RA) 8485, also known as the Animal Welfare Act of 1998, Jiang was also charged with overstaying in the Philippines.

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) confirmed that he was arrested by its intelligence officers at his residence in Barangay Palanan, Makati City, on March 11. The agency reiterated that he entered the country as a tourist in May 2023 but has overstayed his visa since September of the same year.

“Jiang was unable to present any documentation to the arresting agents. He was immediately taken into custody, booked, and transferred to the BI’s facility in Bicutan, Taguig while he faced his deportation case,” the BI said.

BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado warned foreign nationals to abide by Philippine laws during their stay in the country.

“Filipinos are known to be very hospitable to our guests. But guests should not come to our houses kicking our pets. His cruel action led to the BI conducting checks on his records, and now he’s detained to be deported,” he underscored.
