On These Dates, Shibuya Will Hide the Hachiko Statue From Everyone—Here’s Why

If you’re planning on visiting Tokyo anytime soon, you better make adjustments to your schedule if you want to see the Hachiko Statue at Shibuya Station.

The Shibuya Ward Office has announced that the popular tourist attraction will be covered up with barriers beginning 6 AM on October 30 to 5 AM on November 1 to curb the crowds in the area during Halloween.

Shibuya Station and the surrounding shopping streets usually see a meteoric rise in tourists and locals during Halloween over the years which often leads to incidents like vandalism, littering, violence, drunken and disorderly behavior, and more. So much so that Shibuya had put up signs last year warning everyone that “Shibuya is not a Halloween venue.”

Shibuya has also banned public alcohol consumption between 6 PM and 5 AM all year round starting October 1 and all convenience stores are prohibited from selling them during that time period from October 26 to November 1. Ward employees will also be patrolling the area and setting up monitor towers to further prevent Halloween festivities from happening.

This doesn’t mean, however, that people are banned from dressing up and walking around Shibuya on Halloween; you just can’t party or crowd the place anymore.
