5 of Our Favorite Moms and Mother Figures on Netflix

Every Mother’s Day, I make it a point to order in and zone out with my daughter on shows and movies that celebrate motherhood and family, in general. Thinking back on some of the recent things we’ve watched together, we decided to rave about some of our favorite moms and mother figures on Netflix.

If you plan on holding a series – slash – movie marathon with your kid/s this Mother’s Day, check out this list and get ready to bond, laugh, and smile… and don’t forget to get your favorite snacks ready!

5. The Mitchells vs. The Machines’ Linda Mitchell

If you haven’t seen this movie yet, take it from me: kids will looooove it (and so will you). In ‘The Mitchells vs. The Machines’, a robot apocalypse puts the brakes on the Mitchells’ cross-country road trip and it is up to them โ€” the world’s weirdest family โ€” to save the human race. (Doug the Pug in itself is well worth it!)

4. Moxie’s Lisa

I loved ‘Moxie’ because there were so many elements in it that reminded me of my own life… but I won’t get into that in this public space.

‘Moxie’ is the perfect coming-of-age movie for feminists to watch. Bonus points if you love Amy Poehler. Inspired by her mom’s rebellious past and a confident new friend, a shy 16-year-old publishes an anonymous zine calling out sexism at her school.

3. Stranger Things’ Joyce Byers

Aside from simply being the Winona Ryder, Joyce Byers has proven time and time again in ‘Stranger Things’ that she would do anything for her kids. No matter how crazy people thought she was, her faith in her children never wavered, and she always strived to do what was best for them.

In ‘Stranger Things’ Season 1, Joyce’s son Will vanishes and their small town uncovers a mystery involving secret experiments, terrifying supernatural forces, and one strange little girl. I recently got my daughter to watch it and she loved it immensely! It’s one of the most fun series to watch with the family in my opinion.

2. Start-Up’s Choi Won-deok

Choi Won-deok is the mom I really wish I had. She is patient, understanding, helpful, and business-oriented. She had her own corndog business, helped out a boy in need, constantly considered other people’s feelings, and didn’t even let her eye problems bring her down.

1. Yes Day’s Allison Torres

I may be slightly biased because I was able to interview Jennifer Garner before the movie came out and ended up loving her even more, but I believe her portrayal of Allison Torres in ‘Yes Day’ definitely deserves to be on this list.

Yes Day‘ revolves around two parents who decide to say yes to all of their kids’ wildest requests for a day, which turns into a whirlwind of events filled with fun, adventure, and tears.

I love Allison’s growth in this movie. In a single day, she started realizing things as a mother that she hadn’t realized before. Plus, she was super willing to talk to her kids, figure out solutions, and work with her partner to make sure that she could be the best mom she could ever be. Such a tearjerker. I loved this movie so much.
