My Top 10 Best TV Shows of 2016

Okay guys! Itโ€™s that time of the year where I give you my top 10 TV shows of 2016. Let me remind you, however, that these are TV shows I personally watch; so, your favorite show might not be here if I donโ€™t watch it. Also, this is my list; so, itโ€™s highly subjective.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

Well, letโ€™s get started with some honorable mentions:

The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow (collectively known as the ARROWVERSE on the CW Network) and Agents of SHEILD (on ABC)ย – Being a giant comic book geek, these shows are still close to my heart; but, the many of shows on the my top 10 had enormous budgets. How can they expect to compete with that? Plus, the previous seasons for each of these shows werenโ€™t their best. I hope they recover soon.

The Walking Dead โ€“ After they killed off Glenn, I tried watching the show; but, it just made me feel more depressed. Heck! I donโ€™t recommend this show for anyone feeling suicidal right now.

Frequencyย – This show nearly made my list. It is based on the 2000 movie of the same title (starring Dennis Quaid). Itโ€™s about a femaleย cop in 2016 who, by some mysterious event, can now communicate with her dead father in 1996 through an old ham radio. Because of this, they accidentally change the past… and create a dangerous situation in the present that they must now work to stop. This show is off to a good start and is really entertaining. I recommend you watch it for its entertainment value and (of course) Peyton List.

Now, for my TOP 10…

My Top 10 Best TV Shows of 2016

10. Mister Robot

Our favorite vigilante hacker, Elliot, is back! But, this time, he has to deal with the consequences of his actions during season one. To be honest, the second season of Mister Robot wasnโ€™t as good as the first; but, it was still fun to watch.

However, I am a little disappointed that the producers tried to do too much with this seasonโ€ฆ perhaps trying too hard to emulate the awesomeness of the first season. I hope they get back into the game in season 3.

9. Someone to Watch over Me

Surprise! This is the first time Iโ€™ve ever put a Filipino TV series on this list; so, this says a lot about the show itself. It was a show about how a family deals with โ€˜early onset Alzheimerโ€™s diseaseโ€™. This show reminded me about what my father went through and it was portrayed quite accurately.

Tom Rodriguezโ€™s portrayal of a young man diagnosed with Alzheimerโ€™s disease was truly believable and painful to watch. The supporting cast wasnโ€™t bad, either. The only reason this isnโ€™t higher-ranked in this list is because the producers (like most Pinoy producers) dragged the story out too long, probably trying to milk its popularity.

8. Luke Cage

The Marvel and Netflix partnership does it again! The indestructible hero delivered in almost every beat and would have been much higher on this list if they hadnโ€™t killed off a certain character I loved in the middle of the season. This show had so many viewers during its premiere episode that it literally caused Netflix to stop operating for more than 2 hours.

Personally, however, I think the first half of this show was better than the second half. At any rate, this has gotten me quite excited for The Defenders next year.

7. Daredevil

Yet, another Marvel/Netflix series makes my list. I have only one thing to say about Daredevil season twoโ€ฆ the Punisher! The first four episodes pitting Daredevil against the Punisher was pure TV gold. Too bad they didnโ€™t just stick to this story arch to the end.

In the fifth episode, the producers decided to introduce another story arch with Electra and the Hand. Although, I love Electra, the shift in story just made it feel a little too convoluted. That being said, itโ€™s still one heck of a geek-out for me to see all these characters done right in live action.

6. Justice League Action

Yes, itโ€™s an animated series. Yes, each episode is only 15 minutes longโ€ฆ but, itโ€™s one FUN ride! It was made with both kids and grown-ups in mind. With veteran voice talents (like Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamil) lending their voices to these characters and great stand-alone stories, Justice League Action has something for everyone. Okay! Okay! Iโ€™m an eight-year-old inside.

5. The People versus OJ Simpson

I only started watching it because I was familiar with the trial (from the news back in the day) and I was curious to see how it would be portrayed. Now, Iโ€™m hooked! Itโ€™s an amazing courtroom drama. John Travolta and Cuba Gooding Jr. steal every scene. Itโ€™s compelling, witty and suspenseful. What more could you ask of a TV show?

4. Vikings

Itโ€™s no โ€˜Game of Thronesโ€™; but, it got me cheering for a barbaric psychopathic killer with no remorse. If you think itโ€™s an action drama, think again. This show is actually a political thriller. Also, a lot of the events in this show are historically accurate. Sure, the producers took some liberties with these historical characters; but, the traditions, culture and way of life of these Vikings well researched. I would expect no less from the History Channel.
