6. Castlevania
If you ever owned a gaming console in the 90s and never played Castlevania, sorry to say, but your childhood experience was incomplete. (Loljk!) But seriously though, Castlevenia is one of the best-selling games of all time, consequently churning out about 30 sequels and spin-offs. Castlevania is a horror/gothic adventure game mostly set in, you guessed it, Dracula’s famous castle. Also one of the oldest games in this list, Castlevania actually came out in 1986 for the Nintendo Family Computer, although perhaps the most popular is Castlevania: Symphony of the Night which came out in 1997 for the PlayStation.
5. Breath of Fire
Another RPG, Breath of Fire was first released on the Super Nintendo in 1993. Although its developer, Capcom, has since released five follow-ups to the original with Breath of Fire 2 to 6, five was released back in 2002 for the PlayStation 2, while six came out in 2016 but only for Windows and mobile (Android and iOS).
Capcom considers Breath of Fire to be their best RPG as it is also the most successful, but the last installments to the franchise weren’t as well received as the first ones. With that, perhaps it is time to go back to basics, and offer a remake of the original, as fans have been hoping for.
4. Silent Hill
This survival horror game isn’t just scary, it’s bone-chilling terrifying. Silent Hill eventually grew into an eight-installment franchise with a couple of spin-offs, but say the title and almost always (or always), it’s the first one that comes to mind. Originally released in 1999 for the PlayStation, Silent Hill 1 was such a hit that it was adapted into a movie in 2006.
And why hasn’t there been a remake of the original Silent Hill? Fans want it, for sure. Just imagine just how scary (aka amazing) it would be exploring the eerie town of Silent Hill in HD.
3. Legend of Legaia
Some say that Legend of Legaia is one of the most underappreciated games of all time, and the fact that it is number three in this list perhaps does say something about that. Legend of Legaia, by Prokion and Contrail, was released in 1998 for the PlayStation. And while the game received fairly positive reviews, it was still deeemed far from perfectโby critics at least. Fortunately, for common gamers, Legend of Legaia is still a highly engaging game with a good enough plot that anyone can enjoy.
2.ย Chrono Cross
Another one by Square Enix, Chrono Cross was released in 1999 for the PlayStation as a sequel to its 1995 predecessor, Chrono Trigger, for the Super Nintendo. Chrono Cross debuted to critical acclaim, earning perfect scores from video game reviewers. It also sold over a million copies worldwide. One of the most voted games by our friends and readers, it is clear that Chrono Cross is still well-loved to this day, and is definitely due for a much-deserved remake.
1. Suikoden 2
Although its predecessor, Suikoden 1, is also note-worthy, Konami’s Suikoden 2 simply stands out. And not just from the franchise it belongs in, but in the history of RPGs as well. Which is why perhaps it is the most voted “game we wish to get a remake” by our readers.
Suikoden 2 is a staple in “best RPGs of all time” lists, some critics even claiming it to be the actual “best game ever made”โsurpassing even Square Enix’s illustrious Final Fantasy franchise. Suikoden 2 might be less known, less glamorous, and (graphically-speaking) less attractive than the giant franchises the world knows, but its beautiful storyline and fantastic gameplay make up for everything and more. Different actions throughout the game even lead you to three different, but equally riveting, endings!
Indeed, the younger generation of gamers need to know about Suikoden 2 (and even 1!), while its older, loyal fans deserve to be reunited with it. Suikoden II was released in 1998 on the PlayStation.
