When in Manila, it was indeed a night of greatness – Globe’s way of honoring different individuals and groups who have influenced and shaped the way we think now. The Rigodon Ballroom of the Peninsula Manila was filled with a great crowd last Friday night – writers, bands, media personalities, andย citizen journalists alike – and it was awe inspiring just to see how much influential people we have locally.

The event was hosted by the great tandem of Tim Yap and Becky Queen, Divine Lee. Tim admitted that he didn’t even know how to start a computer back then, and that he actually swore to “be the last person you can contact via landline.” (that from someone who has nearly half a million followers on Twitter)
Ms. Maria Ressa has never failed with her talks. She discussed how powerful the internet is, and how we can make it work for everyone. She said that “the internet creates a second layer of reality, yanking and making things happen in the real world.” A true geek at heart, she ended her speech with, “May the force be with you”.

Side note: Ms. Maria Ressa got the spoiler award because she announced the winner as soon as she got on stage, forgetting to tell who the nominees were first. The crowd went dead air silent for a bit, which was followed by cheering. LOL. She’s so funny!

ย We were all in awe of the winners. Personally, I commend them for creating online revolutions, and I thank this era for making that possible. Everyone who has access to the internet can now possibly create something viral and influential. News doesnโt have to wait โtil the following day, and making news can be done in a few clicks. Like what Ms. Ressa said, everyone can be citizen journalists.
When in Manila, have you asked yourself how you can make a difference through the internet? Congratulations to the Winners of the Globe Tatt Awards 2011 – Awards Night
